How to make the most of the right ones for you

Much of the world has been in lockdown for the past few months, and while there are small signs of a clearing in some areas, the long term effects of this pandemic will remain to be seen for some time to come. Many retailers and consumers have found ways to adapt, and the jewelry industry has been no exception.

Surely if you haven’t attended a webinar yourself, you’ve been tipped off to the fact that they’ve been happening online—there are a lot of them. It feels like the industry’s way of getting together, of reaching out in support for one another, a way of saying, “we’ve got this.” Many webinars are designed to teach businesses ways to cope with the ongoing shutdowns, offering ideas to stay connected with customers, build an online business, and cut costs where possible.

It’s a wonderful thing, to have such a wealth of information available at this time. But with so very many webinar options, how can you choose what’s right for you? You may be spending more time at home, but that certainly doesn’t mean there’s time to attend each and every online offering. 

First things first: what are your current, most prudent goals? They probably look a little differently than three months ago. Where once you may have dreamt of hosting more in-store trunk shows, now you’re trying to build up your e-commerce abilities. And that’s great—as quickly as one can adapt to this new way of doing business, the better to reach new and existing customers. Even when businesses begin to re-open, there will be shoppers who prefer to do their business at a distance—cater to them as much as you are able.

Or perhaps you feel it’s of best interest to work on reallocating your finances—how can you retain your employees? Maybe you’re interested in working out a new marketing plan, or need help beefing up your social media presence. There’s a webinar for nearly every important issue a jeweler might face, the trick is to pick one or two that feel the most valuable at the moment, and strive to get the most out of it.

So once you’ve chosen the discussions most right for you, how do you get the most out of it? Everyone learns a little differently. Some find they retain the most information by simply listening and taking it all in. Others fervently take notes. Many go somewhere in between. Try finding a good note-taking app, or simply have your smartphone’s notepad open at the ready, so you can type away at any interesting points you come across. Ensure that you’re viewing the webinar in a comfortable, quiet environment that cultivated a good learning experience. If you’re schooling the kids at home, daytime webinars might not be your best bet. Have no fear, though—many webinars are available online for later viewing, so even if you miss the live stream, you can find it online for viewing later. And the same goes for watching it live—if you find you’d like to watch it again, or missed some note-taking opportunities, you will have the option to go back and do that.

Once you’ve gotten your notes written down, your mind buzzing with the knowledge it just took in, take a few moments to make things personal. How can you translate what was just learned into reasonable, actionable goals for your business? Set your intentions and build out a plan, armed with the knowledge you just gained from the comfort of your easy chair.
